UPDATE #1 - ‘Cultural Grounding’ Held at Creswick with travel to Bendigo on Sunday. Highlights included: yarns with Aunty Jill Gallagher (former Treaty Commissioner) and Aunty Eleanor Bourke (former Yoorrook Justice Commissioner) and Karen Diver (former Advisor to Barack Obama for Native American Affairs); WTC Ceremony by DDW which also encompassed a ‘Three fire Ceremony’ where 3 fires were lit to held to acknowledge the previous Assembly, the current Assembly and the Elders Council with a transfer of ownship for cultural items was completed. 4-5 May 2026: Assembly preparation. Held at Djaara. Highlights included: meeting senior staff, legal team and support staff and receiving Co-Chair nominations for consideration. 6-7 May 2026: Inaugural Chamber /Meeting Held at Djaara. Focused on foundational decision-making including the election of Co-Chairs Meriki Onus and Djaran Murray-Jackson. UPDATE #2 Lots of exciting things happening within Gellung Warl: 13th-15th May 2026-Our Assembly come together to workshop with the aim of informing further embedding of Gellung Warl foundations. Outcomes to these workshops will shape our committees and leadership (via election within the Assembly). 27th May 2026-Myself and Co-Chair Djaran Murray-Jackson attended the last day of the National Walk For Truth led by Travis Lovett and following on from Yoorrook Justice Commissions’ work into truth-telling in Victoria. 28th-29th May 2026-Chamber meeting held online to elect leadership and membership to our committees. Official announcement of these appointments are currently being announced. Yesterday was the first of the deadly announcements as follows: Co-Chairs of the Elders Voice being Uncle Troy Austin and Aunty Thelma Chilly and Youth Voice Co-Conveners are Tarni Morris and Levi Power. More announcements to come… Our next Chamber meeting is in Naarm from 22nd June 2026 til 25th June 2026. We are expected to make our inaugural speeches on the 22nd June 2026 at Parliament house. It will also be livestreamed for those interested in tuning in. We also have a South West Treaty page on Facebook if GMTOAC would like to use any photos/updates from there as well otherwise I will endeavour to update roughly monthly. I look forward to continuing updating Gunditjmara on Gellung Warl again soon.
UPDATE #3 Gellung Warl in June 2026 looked like: 11th June 2026: TOCC Meeting for Reserved Seat Holders to attend alongside our TO groups to discuss relevant TO matters. Reserved Seat Holders attend these meetings in support of (and not to replace) our TO groups. 17th and 18th June 2026: As we are establishing our Committees to ensure we are accountable to the Statewide Treaty Act 2025 and ahead of this months' Chamber Meeting-I attended the 'Community Answerability Framework Workshop' facilitated by Alison Vivian in Naarm which spoke to Nation Building including the work Gunditjmara has participated in which was deadly. 22nd June 2026: Inaugural speeches at Parliament House and the link to mine is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBtgUMBO1Uc&list=PLdJnA43o7kqM&index=17 24th -25th June 2026: Chamber meeting held in person in Naarm with continuing foundational decision-making including further establishment of committees and their respective membership. Uncle Mook and Aunty Esme were elected as co-convenors of the Economic Self Determination and Nation Building Committee as a highlight. June also further work of our established committees embed Statewide Treaty commitments into our work plans. Our next Chamber meeting is 6th and 7th August 2026 via online.
UPDATE #4 Cannot believe we are up to update #4! Time is flying by 🙂 This update is brief due to extended Sorry Business for my family group and me taking time off. Weekly meetings established are as follows: -All Member meetings. -Leadership meetings. -Committee planning meetings (eg Yurpa Co-convenors and Operations staff). Regular meetings include: -Committee meetings (and as determined by the respective co-convenors and as per each of our committees workplan according to the Act). Committees and co-convenors within Gellung Warl are now: -Economic Development and Nation Building (Uncle Mook and Aunty Esme) -State Relations (Indi Clarke and Leanne Fary) -Institute (Barry Firebrace-Briggs and Isobel Murphy-Walsh) -Yurpa (Andrew Thorpe and Keicha Day) Thanks and wuwuk! 🙂
UPDATE #5 August 2026 on Gellung Warl included continued leave for the first couple of weeks due to Sorry Business and was an apology for the scheduled Chamber meeting for this month. I then returned to participate/attend as follows: 12th August 2026: Sustainability Process Workshop attended by the leadership group (known as 'the Shield'). 18th August 2026: TOC Caucus meeting. 18th August - 20th August 2026: First Nations Clean Energy Symposium. This month saw Yurpa Committee be responsible for facilitating yarns around Statewide events as well as attending weekly and regular meetings as per my previous report. I also was able to attend a Gunditjmara Native Title meeting. The next Chamber meeting is scheduled for 28th September 2026 til the 1st October 2026 in Lakes Entrance with a Cultural Grounding day kicking us off on the first day. Until next time, wuwuk!
