Nicky and Alicia attended the 11th Australian Stream Management Conference & Awards Gala hosted by the River Basement Management Society that focused on Freshwater aquatic species within Australia where they, alongside Harry Coleman a PHD student from Deakin University who is studying Kooyang within our region had the honour of presenting on the work they are doing together that is using Environmental DNA to detect where Kooyang are within the waterways of Budj Bim. Their presentation was named Blending Indigenous science with molecular techniques using Environmental DNA.
During this Conference they attended the Awards Gala where their work at Gunditj Mirring TOAC won the award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge and Practice in Waterway Management. This award recognises the great work they are doing in the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape Waterway Management Program.
Also as a side note, we would like to congratulate Harry for also winning an award for Blending cultural science with genetic techniques for Kooyang conservation in partnership with Gunditj Mirring TOAC on the Budj Bim Landscape.
